Historical Foundation of Tantra

Classical Indian Tantra & Hatha Yoga

The roots of Tantra extend far deeper, originating in ancient Indian spiritual traditions. Classical Tantra is inseparable from Hatha Yoga, which developed as a tantric discipline of the body.

Hatha Yoga and Tantra share a common foundation:

  • the body as a sacred instrument
  • breath as a bridge between matter and consciousness
  • energy (prana) as a living force to be cultivated, not controlled

In this tradition, tantric practice includes:

  • asana (posture)
  • pranayama (breathwork)
  • bandhas and mudras
  • meditation and ritual

Hatha Yoga was never merely physical — it was designed as a tantric technology to prepare the nervous system, awaken subtle energy, and support states of deep presence and realization.

Taoist Tantra & Sexual Alchemy

We honors the Taoist approach to sexuality and energy, where sexual practice is understood as a form of internal alchemy.

This lineage, often associated with teachers such as Mantak Chia, emphasizes:

  • cultivating and circulating sexual energy
  • nervous system regulation
  • longevity, vitality, and emotional balance

Rather than peak experience, Taoist tantra values sustainability, integration, and refinement — learning how sexual energy supports health, clarity, and consciousness over time.

Neo-Tantra: A Contemporary Embodied Path

Much of what is known today as Neo-Tantra emerged in the 20th century through the work of Osho, who played a central role in bringing tantric principles into a contemporary, experiential, and embodied context.

Osho emphasized:

  • direct experience over belief
  • the body as a gateway to consciousness
  • sexuality as a natural, sacred force rather than something to repress or idealize

Neo-Tantra, integrates:

  • conscious sexuality
  • emotional awareness
  • relational presence
  • meditation in movement and connection

It speaks to modern individuals who seek integration rather than renunciation, and who wish to explore intimacy, awareness, and transformation in everyday life.
